Modern treatment for sanitary wastewaters in the mine area
Boliden Kevitsa Mining Oy
Boliden Kevitsa was interested in updating the treatment of sanitary waters in the mine area to meet modern requirements in relation to the process and the environment.
Treatment of sanitary waste waters at Boliden Kevitsa mine area was based on precipitation and no longer met the requirements for modern process control and monitoring.
Biological waste water treatment is challenging in arctic circumstances especially considering the tightening regulatory requirements. TeVe Water acquired thorough understanding of the existing sanitary water treatment system, which Boliden wanted to develop to correspond modern process and environmental requirements. Based on the understanding as well as monitoring of the plant operation, the process phases to be updated and developed were identified.
In line with Boliden expectations, TeVe Water responded to the challenge to update the waste water treatment and participated in the design and construction of the new waste water treatment plant with responsibility on scaling, process descriptions, process state plans, process control systems, automation systems, compressed air systems and sampling schemes. An important part in the new waste water treatment plant was modernization of process control and the remote operation capabilities thanks to which TeVe Water and Bolider are able control the waste water treatment plant with no need of physical presence. In addition to updated biological waste water treatment, tertiary treatment with clarification and drum filtration was introduced. Education of plant personel was also an important part of the project.
Current remotely-controllable waste water treatment plant at Boliden mine fulfills all modern environmental and process requirements. Key aspects for successful design and implementation were profound expertise in water treatment processes, long-term approach and holistic understanding. In the future, TeVe Water is willing to help in all similar challenges.
